Meeting Basic Human Needs

Found in the 2009 New Orleans Index. Over half of all the buildings in St. Bernard Parish (bordering the east side of Orleans parish) are abandoned. Crazy.

Great pics of St. Bernard parish soon after the storm on Jennie Clutterbuck’s flickr. Jennie actually worked with Emergency Communities at Made with Love Cafe, which was a community center of sorts immediately after the storm. Many of the people who worked there have had some involvement with the Community Center of St. Bernard. (including our executive director)

Our executive director Iray was just named a Tyson Foods Hunger All-Star! Tyson Hunger Relief is Tyson’s attempt at contributing to the fight against poverty, and one of their initiatives is spot lighting people who are really making a difference. Three days a week the Center is overflowing with people waiting for the food pantry in need of supplies to feed their families. Its great that Tyson has recognized us and many other Tyson-Heroes, hopefully they will inspire the rest of us to do more.

Peace Out Productions just released the trailer to their new documentary “Survival, Strength, Starting Over”. We are all really excited about the film over at the Center because it really focuses on the residents of St. Bernard Parish who often go overlooked when compared to other victims of the storm. The full length film will be out and playing on Aug 22 - I’ll definitely let people know when and where they can see the doc.

The Numbers are in!

With the help of some incredible volunteers today we cranked the numbers on how many people we helped in July, and exactly how we helped them.

The Mustard Seed food pantry is one of the most popular services at the Community Center, and this week we gave out almost 24,000 lbs of food to more then 1600 individuals.

We have also been extremely fortunate to have volunteers come to the Center almost every day. In July we had 145 volunteers pass through with a total work time of almost 900 hours.

Some other hot numbers: 347 books were given out to the community, 1857 items were given out from the Clothing bank, the computer lab was accessed 712 times (also a hot commodity here at the Center), 296 people interviewed for food stamps, and 18 people received a massage.

Listed above are just a few of the many free services the Center offers to the public. While nearing the 4th anniversary of the storm, the residents of St. Bernard Parish are still in great need of clothing, food, employment, and general help. Although we are happy that we have been able to help so many people, we are hopeful that soon people will be able to make it on their own.
